Some New Old Stuff…The Holiday Edition.

With the business of the last few weeks I almost forgot to show off some of my latest and greatest finds! I even used some I my holiday decor…but I think they need their own spotlight.

This Swedish dough bowl is about 100 years old… and it has aged well. Last seem on my kitchen counter with greens and red stars, it now hangs in its permanent space…but it will make a surprise appearance elsewhere from time to time.

This candy dispenser…so many comments about it. An original from the 1920’s holds just about everything in the most beautiful way. Designed to be stacked in a drugstore, you could see the contents from first glance. It is one of my most favorite finds ever.

You can never have too many vintage suitcases! I acquired a few more without measuring…and look they fit perfectly. I wish everything would turn out so well.

Another lucky find…on a Thanksgiving outing with my hero. Thank goodness he never questions the need for another bread board…at least not out loud.

Busy week indeed…The Princess hangs the best she can but sometimes she just needs a power nap!

I love yummy dips! This Pimento Cheese dip sounds wonderful, perfect for that Super Bowl party. I’m not much of a professional football fan but it is exciting that my hometown team will be playing…go Eagles…I might even watch a little.

Honey Salty Heaven On A Plate

This week the Princess asked if we could make a pie together. “Sure” I replied nervously as I mentally inventoried my winter pantry. “How about some nice cookies instead ?” I suggested brightly…no go. It was pie. Challenge was on. Pie from my current “week behind on my shopping” kitchen stash. To the rescue…my favorite pie book! I suggest everyone find a copy…immediately if not sooner. The four and Twenty Blackbird Pie Book changed my baking life at the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, New York in 2014.

Salty-Honey pie? It was never one to jump off the page for me. It always seemed a little odd. However, I did have all the ingredients on hand and it seemed relatively easy for a Mama and four year old assistant baker to complete. It was also sweet and salty…a powerful combination for people like me who can’t pick a side in the snack decision.

Who would think that these few humble ingredients would make a pie akin to pastry perfection!

The Usual Cast Of Characters

Salty Honey Pie

makes one 9-inch pie

For the Filling:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon white cornmeal

scant 1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract)

3/4 cup honey

3 large eggs

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar- a change from the original recipe…it was all we had.

1 to 2 teaspoons flaked sea salt

The Steps to Glory

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.  Place a rack in the center of the oven.

To make the filling, in a medium bowl whisk together melted butter, sugar, cornmeal, and salt.  Split vanilla bean  and add the vanilla bean scrapings (or extract, if using) into the butter mixture and whisk until thoroughly combined.  Whisk in honey.

Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking to combine.

Whisk in heavy cream and vinegar.

Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.

Bake pie for 45 to 55 minutes until pie is deep golden brown and puffed around the edges and set in the center.  Open the oven and rotate the pie halfway through baking.  Remove from the oven and allow to rest for at least 4 hours before serving.  Serve warm or at room temperature, and sprinkle with sea salt just before serving.

Imagine a Pie as sweet as this Princess…I don’t think one even exists, even with my magical pie book!

Sacred Rest: A Book Review

About the Book:

Staying busy is easy. Staying well rested- there’s a challenge.

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional.

Dr. Dalton-Smith shares seven types of rest she has found lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research-physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative-and why a deficiency in any one of these types of rest can have unfavorable effects on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity. Sacred Rest combines the science of rest, the spirituality of rest, the gifts of rest, and the resulting fruit of rest. It shows rest as something sacred, valuable, and worthy of our respect.

By combining scientific research with personal stories, spiritual insight, and practical next steps, Sacred Rest gives the weary permission to embrace rest, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any guilt, shame, or fear.

My Review:

Rest. I never seem to get enough…and I can’t be the only one. I try to cope the best I can. I go to bed earlier, wake up later, nap in the afternoon, drink coffee…and more coffee. I’m still tired and never could figure out why. The first thing the author establishes is the difference between rest and sleep. What I long for is not found in a good night sleep. It’s much deeper and satisfying. I long for the peaceful rest found in the confidence in God’s goodness.

This 30 day devotion does not offer any magical formulas or secret tips to this peace. It does lead you gently to discovery. I enjoyed the short daily readings and found myself relaxing as soon as I opened the book each evening. Using examples from her own medical practice, the author, gives concrete advice with gentle reminders that the process is not easy. Often the process will be quite difficult as you identify and work through deep issues which are hindering the ability to find rest. I want that rest. Doesn’t everyone?

Comfy and Cozy

The Princess and I had some time at home this week due to some cold and snow…I’m ready for Spring…Am I the only one? Anyway, her choice of indoor activity? She wanted to get “comfy and cozy,” which meant time on the couch, under a throw, watching DVDs I never thought I would ever watch…Barbie was in quite a few. It was pleasant. It was a feeling I wanted to capture. I hope it is reflected somewhat in my living room winter decor. Everyone would benefit from more “comfy and cozy” in their lives!

A mantel features wooly lambs and a fluffy cotton wreath.

The red maple sap buckets are a favorite of mine. They work great in every season and in every room.

Natural elements like a boxwood wreath, pine cones and found items add contrast and take a room from holiday to winter. The woven baskets are from a trip to Kenya a long time ago.

And what is more cozy than a couch full of pillow and warm throws. Extra ones are stored in a vintage apple crate.

As you can see the Princess takes her “cozy” quite seriously.

A certain little Princess is ready for the snow and cold to end so she can fly around the block again on her new set of wheels.  Did anyone else have freezing temperatures and snow this week? Annapolis had enough to close school for a few days. I’m ready for Spring…anyone else?Enjoy the great features this week!img_1386

Goodbye Christmas

I love the holidays. It is a magical time of year, however, it is exhausting. Once January arrives the Christmas decor I loved a few weeks ago begins to seem gaudy and overwhelming. My eyes long for a simple place to land…if this makes sense. I just wish undecorating was as fun as decorating. I like my winter decor to reflect a more scaled back, cleaner tone but I find if it is too austere, I get a nervous feeling…kind of like a hospital. I need some color. My kitchen was the first room to wear Christmas finery, and the first to be reverted to “normal but better”. It is also a great way to show off some new features of my newly updated kitchen!

Red berries that graced windows for Christmas, look perfectly wintry in an antique dough bowl.

The kitchen island just needs a few touches to go from Christmas to winter wonderland.

A new dish towel turned to pillow graces a kitchen chair.

Check out my new baking area! Everything I need is close by!

Our Princess loved the holiday season and had a few days to enjoy her favorite gift before the cold and snow hit us hard. Next week it looks more promising for a cruise around the neighborhood!

What am I doing this week? Undecorating…I only wish it was as much fun as decorating. I am also taking some time out to make the yummy Chess Pie featured this week. After the rich and sweet treats of Christmas this pie looks so simple and light. Perfect for the snowy days of January!
