May Day Happenings

There’s a quiet kind of magic that settles over Annapolis each spring. After winter fades, color returns all at once—window boxes spilling over, gardens stretching awake, and the air carrying that soft, floral sweetness.

One of the loveliest traditions here is the May Day basket. On the first of May, small bundles of flowers appear on porches—simple, thoughtful, and often a surprise. It’s such a gentle gesture, but it lingers. Opening your door to fresh blooms feels like a little reminder that someone was thinking of you.

That tradition stayed with me this year and inspired a few changes at home. Nothing big—just small floral touches. A jar of fresh-cut flowers on the counter, a sprig of greenery by the sink, a hint of pattern on the table. Little things, but they’ve made the house feel brighter and more alive.

And maybe that’s the heart of it. Spring flowers aren’t just about how they look; they’re about how they make us feel. Hopeful. Connected. Gently reminded that beauty doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful

.

So here’s to the small surprises on our porches, the blossoms in our homes, and the traditions that bloom right alongside the season.

  2. I love that tradition! I wish we all did that. I love how you brought the tradition inside, too. Visiting from the To Grandma’s House We Go link party.

  3. Amy, this is such a lovely tradition of hanging flowers on someone’s door handle or here where folks put flowers on the porch! Our Girl Scout troop made May Day baskets to hang on neighbors’ doors years ago ~ it was a fun, doorbell ditch thing and the kids loved surprising friends and neighbors! In Hawaii, we made leis for our teachers and if we were in school on May 1st, we wrapped crepe paper streamers around the flagpole and sang as we walked around the pole with our streamers tangling them. It was fun!

Happily shared your post at this week’s Share Your Style #498 for you,

    Hugs,
