Annapolis Winter

Annapolis really comes alive in the summer with it’s majestic sailboats on the beautiful water, warm evenings on vintage front porches and Norman Rockwell inspired 4th of July celebrations. Some people will tell you it is their favorite place to be during those hot summer months. I love my Annapolis summers but I also enjoy the less crowded, more subtle Winter days…especially in the snow! Last week we were treated to a snowfall and we returned home from a short winter family vacation to a beautiful snow covered city. Come visit Annapolis in the winter…I always have hot cocoa.

A snowy day at the Naval Academy.

The boats wait silently for summer to arrive.

Our beautiful State Capitol building in the snow.

Vintage houses straight out of a storybook.

Including our sweet vintage foursquare.

The perfect reason to enjoy a roaring fire.

Fitting the Pieces Together

I love my home. I love the cozy, “slightly cluttered but in a tasteful way” vibe, I love the character pieces that hold so many stories, and I love the memories behind some of my favorite things. They reflect my past that shaped me into my present. I also love that pieces from different countries and decades can mesh so well together. Let me introduce some treasures from my time in Asia! Who knew block prints and obis would work perfectly with antique English oak and well loved American made quilts.

A gorgeous woodblock print from Japan.

Silk obis are a beautiful exotic touch.

Both beautiful and soothing, this sand garden is a favorite.

How can you not smile when you see these cute kokeshi dolls.

Basketball game this weekend…Navy won!

Pie Is Always The Right Choice

This was a long week I have to admit. Fighting to keep the household healthy amidst, it seemed like, dozens of meetings, appointments and various other commitments, plus the struggle to create the perfect “100 Day Of School” t-shirt…it was long. Pie is necessary. Pie makes everything better. I liked the sound of this Four and Twenty Blackbirds pie recipe, Rosemary Honey Shoofly Pie. The rosemary gave me a little pause, but hey, life is an adventure!
I had a homemade pie crust waiting in the freezer for me. I won’t judge if you use store bought. For best results pre bake for 20 minutes at 425F. using foil liner and pie weights.
The Usual Cast Of Characters
For the pie filling
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp rosemary leaves
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp butter, cut into ½-inch pieces
  • ¾ cup honey
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tsp cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup brewed coffee, warm

Steps To Glory

  1. Heat oven to 350F.
  2. Combine the sugar and rosemary leaves in the bowl of a food processor and process until the rosemary is broken down into fine pieces. Add in the flour, salt, cinnamon, and butter. Process until it is the texture of wet sand. Remove from the food processor to a small bowl and refrigerate until ready to use.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the honey and eggs until well combined. Mix in the milk, salt, and cider vinegar. Stir the baking powder into the coffee and slowly pour it into the honey mixture, whisking constantly.
  4. Place the prebaked pie shell onto a foil-lined baking sheet. Remove the crumb mixture from the fridge and spread one cup of it over the bottom of the pie shell in an even layer. Gently pour the honey mixture into the crust and then sprinkle with the remaining crumb mixture.
  5. Bake for 45-55 minutes, rotating about 30-35 minutes into baking, once the edges are beginning to set. You’ll know the pie is done when the edges are completely set and puffed slightly, though the center may still be a bit loose. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack for 2-3 hours. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

Perfect…just like our Kindergartener!

Sweet Love

Trust me when I say that winter still has us in its grip. Snow is still in the forecast and the air is downright bitter outside the door. We still have many more cozy days in front of the fire to enjoy, however, things are looking a bit brighter around the house. Love is in the air! Valentines Day is almost here! Decorating for Valentines is a new experience for me, but I think I love that it gives me the opportunity to add some color to my winter decor! Enjoy these simple touches in my home, and I hope you feel the love.

I love antique postcards…

…very very much!

Did I mention antique postcards? And enamelware!

Beautiful pillows made with antique fabric make me happy!

Especially when they are paired with even more love!
