Grain Sack Love

Does anyone else share my love for grain sacks? I’m sure my Midwest Grandparents would have found it unusual, to say the least, that I was decorating my home with something they, most likely, saw only in a barn. I don’t know why but I am drawn the nubby, primitive texture and the colors, and I can’t seem to get enough. Let me show you some of my favorite ways to use them in my home. Do you have a great idea? I’m always open to suggestions. Any other grain sack fanatics out there?

Slip a plain bench cushion inside a large grain sack for an easy and instant reupholstered look.

A grain sack turned into a tote…turned into a pillow brightens up a dark antique bench.

A grain sack and some burlap ribbon makes an unusual window treatment.

Remove the side seams of a grain sack and it makes a striking accent on a simple chair.

Our Princess is developing her own decorating style…Alas, no interest in grain sack accents but a pink unicorn is a must.

Such a Creampuff!

Did you ever run across a recipe in an odd random place that made you pause and wonder if it could really really be that simple? Well, while planning out my usual busy week in my day book, I glanced at the colorful “tips and tidbits” section included in the margins and noticed something that stopped me cold…was it really that easy to make a creampuff? I mean there are like only four ingredients listed. It can’t be. But it was. Are you doubtful? Try it for yourself!

The Usual Cast Of Characters

1/4 cup of butter

1/2 cup of water

1/2 cup flour

2 eggs

1 1/2 cup heavy cream ( or personal taste)

The Steps to Glory

1. Preheat oven to 375 degeees

2. Boil water and butter together.

3. Remove from heat and add flour all at once, beating rapidly till dough forms a ball

4. Add eggs one at a time beating until dough is smooth

5. Using a teaspoon, drop dough on lined cookie sheet about 2 inches apart…can be made larger if desired.

6. Bake 16 minutes until brown and puffed

7. Remove pan from oven and make a slit in each puff

8. Turn oven off and place pan back in oven for 10 more minutes

9. Cool on rack. Whip cream with a little sugar to taste

10. Cut tops off puffs, fill with cream and place tops back on

11. Optional: spoon chocolate sauce over before serving

Hope you enjoy!

Happy Chinese New Year from our Princess!

My Review:

Sometimes I look to the news and see that the world around me has given up on the concept of lasting romance. It is considered a quaint, old-fashion notion, not modern or even obtainable in this age. In our throwaway society no one wants to bother to work through the hard patches…you simply pack up and move on. This book shines a light in our romance deprived world by giving us wonderful examples of real couples who have weathered the storms of life together. The book never claims to have the magic formula to an easy married life, but it does show how intentional and focused attention to troubles can lead to even stronger bonds. Lastly, the importance of faith in these relationships is woven throughout the book. A wonderful read for Valentine’s Day.

A Little Love

I spread a little love around the house. We can always use a little love don’t you think?

A trio of quilt hearts grace a bed.

A copper heart mold…just found in a basement box…imagine that!

Another lovely quilt heart with beautiful reds

Vintage cards on the Eiffel Towervery romantic

And a little Princess shows some love by washing a window and I didn’t even mind having to rewash it the next day.

So Very Sweet

I never really know what to do with Valentine’s Day…I like red things but I’m not fond of pink (outside the Princess’s bedroom). I like sweets, but I don’t own any heart shaped baking dishes. I’m really uncomfortable with the thought of a small naked Cupid shooting me with an arrow…it just sounds creepy. But enter into the picture a cute little pre-K girl who adores pink and ruffles and loves her friends and teachers. A great deal of time was spent in the CVS card aisle selecting just the perfect set of cards to exchange at school…the stakes are pretty high, people! Maybe a little bit of Valentine seeped into me because I was suddenly inspired to create a Valentine mantel display…and yes, it has ruffles, pink and and cute cards..the Princess approved.

Vintage postcard always charm me…even the Cupids.

Vintage teacups inherited from two Grandmothers add a flowery touch.

Lacy doilies are frilly addition.

Antique bottles add sparkle.

Know what else is cute? This little Eagles fan!
