I love Fall…I love pumpkins…I love pumpkin pie, although, I suspect the love has to do more with the spices than actual pumpkin. With a family of three, including one very picky toddler, an entire pumpkin pie seems to last a long time…dare I say too long? With some time on my hands, a cabinet of rarely used specialty baking items and the magical world of Pinterest ( it has the ability to suck me in and keep me unaware of the passage of time!), I set out to make a smaller version…and I found it…and I can’t wait to eat it. 

The usual cast of pumpkin pie characters:

1. 2 eggs beaten 

2. 15 oz can of pumpkin purée.  I measured from a large can and froze the rest for future use.  

3. 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk

4. 2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice

Cream the above ingredients together until smooth.

The steps:

1. Using a regular size pie crust, I cut two circles large enough to line my 5 inch pot pie pans (from Miles Kimball catalog many years ago). I filled each 3/4 full of pumpkin purée mixture… I had 2 interesting issues suddenly appear and easily solved…

A. Too much filling..I froze the excess to bake in small ramekins for a tasty treat

B. Leftover pie crust…I rolled and cut into leaf shapes with my Marshalls purchased leaf cookie cutter. They look darling on the little pumpkin pies!

2. Bake at 425 for 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Top with adorable leaf cut out.

3.  Enjoy with a nice glass of apple cider.

I love Fall.  I love apple picking, tall boots, cozy sweaters and the smell of pumpkin spice.  What I don’t like is 90 degree weather in September.  It just does not feel right…and it just doesn’t feel right putting out my autumn wreath and glass blown pumpkins. My plan was to refuse to decorate for Fall until the weather cooperated and then I saw this…

…and I surrendered the battle.  Enjoy the beginning of Fall in our household…trust me there is more to come!

And the best way to enjoy a fall football tailgate when it is 90 degrees? Ice cream of course…with a cookie thrown in for good measure!

Back to school and work…limited time for dinner prep…mind overwhelmed with all the busyness of life this time of year…what can a gal do besides  pulling into that McDonald drive-thru Lane to ensure dinner is on the table? This happened…

The Princess started school…apparently in the age of Aquarius.

The opening game for Navy football…Go Navy! Beat Army!

The always wonderful First Sunday Art Festival in downtown Annapolis…I love that it is an easy walk from our house.

Special breakfast out at The Blue Rooster Cafe.  The princess is fond of the chocolate chip pancakes.

I can’t believe I sent this little thing off to school on Monday. Back in the day I don’t ever remember school starting before Labor Day. At that point you could feel Fall around the edges of the world and the beginning of school just seemed a natural event. Next week the Princess will put on her much too large backpack and enter a new classroom for preschool. I think the fact that I will be teaching at the same school helps take away the sting. But still, she seems much too tiny to be so independent.  She would disagree.  In her honor, I have put together a back to school fireplace mantel.  Enjoy…

I am in love with vintage school items…and always looking for new elements.  The cigar mold is the oddity.   I thought it added an interesting graphic.  

Vintage school books topped by an antique teacher’s school bell. Imagine how many little hands turned the pages in these texts. 

A red lunch pail from the 1920’s and vintage ink bottles. Such beauty in the commonplace.   

When I found this chalkboard the seller said the chalk message was original to the 1876 date…doubtful…but nice to think about.
