I’ve made some changes to our front room recently. With a brand new basement turned playroom, there is room to spread the furniture out a bit and, best of all relocate the huge basket of toys out of adult sight. It is nice.

As much as I love the beauty and sparkle of Christmas, it always seems a little garish as the New Year begins. I love to rest my eyes on a simpler winter styled decor…and how perfect…we even have gently falling snow to complete the picture.

This little cutie has a great view.

A little holiday cheer remains with fresh greenery and berries. The plaid trimmed pillows are made with antique French embroidered grain-sacks.

A cozy winter fire.

Wintery trees and jingle bells on the mantel.

Christmas is in the rear view mirror and Winter is straight ahead. It is time for snow, and snow days, to be a reality. It’s time for mittens and gloves to be mandatory daily wear and not optional. It’s time for cozy evenings by the fire and it’s time for the cozy enjoyment of homemade soup. We started our New Year with this hardy, tasteful meal. I’m mighty glad we did.

The Usual Cast Of Characters

4 cans creamed corn or 2 cans creamed and 2 cans regular corn. You can also used frozen corn.

6-8 quartered red potatoes or more for a chunkier texture.

2 cups chicken broth

1/2 cup Half and Half.

Salt and pepper to taste

The Steps to Glory

1. Place chicken broth and quartered potatoes into a crockpot. Cook on low for 4 hours until potatoes are soft enough to chop into chunky little pieces.

2. Add corn. Cover and cook for 1 hour more.

3. Add half and half. Stir and cook 10 more minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

4. Top with sour cream, cheddar cheese or crumbled bacon.

5. Enjoy the cozy meal as a family.

I hope everyone had a safe, restful season! I love the excitement of the holidays but always appreciate the slower, more simple days of January. It’s a great time to organize, declutter and make some resolutions that are easy to keep. Mine will be to live more intentionally. These days…and years…are flying by, I want to enjoy the now as well as the someday.
