Some New Old Things on Mother’s Day

How does Mother’s Day look at your house? Here is my cozy home in Annapolis, it’s a rainy day on the couch, eating cookies and introducing The Princess to the magic of “Mary Poppins”! Not thrilling but exactly what I dreamed life would be like the first time I met my Princess.

It’s a great day to share some of my new finds. Each one made me stop and smile before I brought them to brighten our cozy home.

This turn of the century Sunshine Biscuit tin joins the Maryland Biscuit tin on the kitchen cabinet.

You can never have too many textile spools.

This beautiful pillow came all the way from France.

I’m not sure where I’m going to put this beautiful antique stained glass window, but it will be the perfect spot eventually.

A Princess in New York Part 3

There are some quintessential New York experiences that are universally enjoyed by everyone no matter your age. Mixing these activities with the more kid friendly experiences allowed us the chance to relive happy memories of our own as we saw them through the eyes of our Princess. A trip to New York City would not be the same without…

…a carriage ride through Central Park.

A glimpse of The Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry…

The excitement of a skyscraper…

…and seeing the city far below.

The perfect egg cream…

…and slice of pizza.

Memories for a lifetime!

A Princess in New York Part 2

Whoever thought that riding a subway would be a highlight of a Spring Break trip? After a few trips the Princess became quite skilled at identifying our train by letter and counting our stops to the next adventure. It was also a great way to reinforce manners and meet a lot of different people, each with a destination in mind. Once again, our days stayed very kid focused, low key and always open to change.

Experiencing Art and Collection

Museums and exhibition are so prevalent everywhere in NYC. It is always a pleasure of mine to wonder and contemplate a lovely art museum or interesting collection. The Princess…not so much. We did discover several ways to hopefully instill a future love of art and collection.

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art is huge, sprawling and a bit overwhelming for many adults to take in at once. It would be wonderful to spend several days here taking some interesting sections slowly, without expectation, however, with a smaller trip this just is not possible. We found that the museum does family activities quite regularly, where the museum is brought down to the youngest visitors level. Plenty of storytelling, experimentation with different mediums and tours to zero in on kid appropriate exhibitions make it a fun afternoon. Plus…there are great fountains outside…

…and a great playground right next door!

Did you know that the real Winnie the Pooh and friends plush toys are on exhibit at the New York Public Library? Better yet..did you know you can visit for free…or a small donation? I must admit I was pretty much excited to see them…I hope the Princess was as well. The Library also runs several story time programs throughout the week, if you have a little more time to spare.

Follow it up with a stroll and picnic in Central Park!

Just so you don’t imagine our trip as totally culture driven, we did drop by The American Girl Store...an exhibit that is mostly for sale. I actually found it quite enjoyable and the Princess was thrilled…so my Hero and I were happy.

Sometimes you need to make dreams come true…Stay tuned for Part 3!

A Princess in New York part 1

What does a Princess do when her school lets out for a generous Spring Break? You jump on a train and head off on adventure…with Mama and Baba in tow of course. My Hero and I have enjoyed several NYC getaways during our marriage, but this would be the first kid-centric trip to the city. We knew what we enjoyed doing there did not always translate well into kid interest without a little tweaking. So with a little research we uncovered several kid options of our favorite activities.

Part 1 The Theatre

I love the Theatre. Our adult trips often included a trip to the USO or reduced ticket outlets to just experience what they happened to offer. If it was terrible, you never felt bad about just slipping out at intermission when the financial investment was so low. Yes, there are great musicals on Broadway that could spark an interest in the Princess, but her wiggly nature and tendency to break down at very tense or loud moments would make the experience a bit unpredictable, which could lead to a very expensive endeavor. To avoid this predicament we found some shorter, more young child friendly…and cheaper options. We spaced them out a few days and followed each with a downtime activity. To say they were a hit would be an understatement!

The Paper Bag Players was one of several smaller children’s Theatre options. They are celebrating their 60th Anniversary this year. The venue was small but large enough to give the experience of a real theater. The show was a series of short skits with lively characters and moral lessons. Wiggles and laughter was strongly encouraged!

The simple sets and engaging performers really made it fun!

The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre is tucked away in Central Park. It can be a little harder to get tickets because the venue is smaller. The show was lovely and held the interest of the Princess the entire time…she is still talking about it. It is a wonderful opportunity to see a professional marionette company perform. Isn’t the Theatre beautiful?

And to follow each experience a sweet treat to enjoy

A frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity 3…

And a trip to Dylan’s Candy Bar…3 levels of yummy goodness!

Stay tuned for Part 2…
