Grain Sack Love

Does anyone else share my love for grain sacks? I’m sure my Midwest Grandparents would have found it unusual, to say the least, that I was decorating my home with something they, most likely, saw only in a barn. I don’t know why but I am drawn the nubby, primitive texture and the colors, and I can’t seem to get enough. Let me show you some of my favorite ways to use them in my home. Do you have a great idea? I’m always open to suggestions. Any other grain sack fanatics out there?

Slip a plain bench cushion inside a large grain sack for an easy and instant reupholstered look.

A grain sack turned into a tote…turned into a pillow brightens up a dark antique bench.

A grain sack and some burlap ribbon makes an unusual window treatment.

Remove the side seams of a grain sack and it makes a striking accent on a simple chair.

Our Princess is developing her own decorating style…Alas, no interest in grain sack accents but a pink unicorn is a must.

  1. Grain sack love was ingrained by my Gram many, many decades ago. She was a firm believer of never of never wasting anything. Among the numerous items she crafted were a table runner, kitchen chair pads, cushions for the sun porch chairs and a huge pillow for Sputnik, her Siamese cat’s bed. Yours are lovely ideas too, especially the window treatment! The Princess certainly has a flair for decorating, you can’t go wrong with a unicorn. She adds beauty to any room just by being there! Thank-you!

    1. Oh I wish I could sew. The skill doesn’t seem to be in my DNA. Our sweet a Princess has a definite flair. I’m trying to embrace the whole sparkly unicorn rainbow stage. Someday I will miss it.

    1. The tote is too pretty to carry things. I knew it should be a pillow when I spotted it. The Princess has her own ideas about decorating. I’m trying to embrace the unicorns and rainbows. This stage is so fleeting and I know I will miss it someday.

  2. Would love to make some but haven’t been able to find old grain sacks that are not real expensive. Any ideas where to get some? Thanks for your reply, you are a girl after my own heart, I just love old!

    1. They are really expensive now, I wish I had a secret source. I did get some from a flea market in Germany when I lived there years ago. I have found a few on eBay but they were a splurge. I think they make some nice reproduction items on Etsy. I am a vintage loving girl. My husband was leery the first few times I dragged home junk but now he sees the beauty in the used.

  4. I am a huge fan of grain sacks for sure. Love all the ways you use them. I fill mine with two down bed pillows each and they become nice comfy bolsters for our couches. I also lay them over the arms of furniture (like the couch and upholstered chairs) to protect the fabric. My princesses loved unicorns, to! 1. They are hard to find. I lived in Germany for a while and picked up a few there pretty reasonably. Probably that is not the case anymore now. I pick up a few here and there if I love the pattern or colors
