My fellow military wives will understand…there is a trade-off to the Navy life. Our current rental in Annapolis is a pretty healthy combination of both adventure and challenge, I mean who won’t rent this 1920 American Foursquare one block from the water and short walk to downtown. It helps to keep this picture in mind as we move into our challenge laden living room…
The Living room…just throw some pillows on the floor and get comfortable. Try not to bump into any furniture on your way to the couch. As you can see space is TIGHT. After having so many of my things in storage, I could not bear to leave it all in the basement but it does present a problem…so glad neither my husband and I are minimalists. Let me distract you…look at the original, working pocket doors!
Another challenge…no window covering on the Windows..and a no drill clause in the lease. Good thing we love our neighbors. The light truly is beautiful in the afternoon so the challenge remained…privacy vs beautiful light. Hanging vintage Windows on the Windows seems to do the trick. The small wreaths change with the seasons.
Our last challenge….the Television! I know, we could probably just throw it away and read quality literature in the evenings…but where would I watch my HGTV? Seriously, it is the only place we could mount the thing.
Let me distract you …look at the original woodwork…..and the chicken feeder with antique bottles…
And roses picked (with assistance) by our very own Princess…that just makes everything right! Although a family room would be nice.

I love a house with character and it looks like you’ve made the most of your challenges, which are few in comparison to the charming features!

I agree. Someday we would love to renovate a character house of our own!

I too love a house with character. I think you did very well making the most of your space. Those pocket doors remind me of my grandmother’s house which I always thought was the most wonderful and exciting house in the world. I loved exploring in it when I was a little girl. Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Sandi

Our landlady told us the pocket doors were sealed into the wall when she bought the house in the late 80’s. What a find for her!

Oh I think you have done a lovely job of working with your space. The room may be a little crowded, but it evokes love and comfort! I have a feeder like that. I’ve brought it indoors off and on, but now it’s outside planted with portulaca. Love it with the bottles and roses! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

You have so many beautiful things! I love all of your collections. Have you considered tension rods with sheer curtains for the windows? I love the vintage windows but privacy is important sometimes too 😀

We tried tension rods but the window rim was too narrow to hold it properly. I think plantation shutters would be an awesome solution but not in this rental. It does make me long for a house of my home…hopefully next year!

Your home is beautiful! I love your collections and the way you’ve displayed them. I didn’t read all the comments, so maybe someone has already said this. You can hang curtains without any drilling by using adjustable tension rods – they don’t leave any marks at all!
